GOEPPERTIA

Goeppertia micans

A perennial Marantaceae species of wet tropical America, transferred to Goeppertia by molecular phylogenetic revision in 2012.

Overview

Goeppertia micans (L.Mathieu) Borchs. & S.Suárez is an accepted species in the family Marantaceae, assigned to Goeppertia Nees — the largest genus in the family. According to Plants of the World Online (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew), the species is a perennial that grows primarily in the wet tropical biome and whose native range extends from Mexico to southern tropical America [2]. The GBIF Backbone Taxonomy records the species under key 8070508 with the IPNI identifier 60461053-2, confirming its accepted status [3].

Goeppertia Nees, as redefined by Borchsenius, Suárez and Prince in 2012, encompasses an estimated 260 accepted species following the demonstration that Calathea G.Mey. as previously circumscribed was polyphyletic [1]. Goeppertia micans is one of the 246 species transferred to the genus by that 2012 revision. Plants of the World Online additionally notes that the species is used as a medicine, without further qualification of application in that record [2].

Nomenclature and synonymy

The basionym is Maranta micans L.Mathieu, published in Prospectus 1853: [s.p.] (1853), which established the epithet micans for this taxon. The combination transferring the species to GoeppertiaGoeppertia micans (L.Mathieu) Borchs. & S.Suárez — was published by Borchsenius, Suárez and Prince in 2012 at page 632 of Systematic Botany 37(3) [1]. Both authorship acts are recorded in the Plants of the World Online synonymy [2].

Before the 2012 revision, the epithet micans was placed in three additional genera. Klotzsch transferred it to Phrynium as Phrynium micans (L.Mathieu) Klotzsch in Allg. Gartenzeitung 22: 249 (1854). Körnicke transferred it to Calathea as Calathea micans (L.Mathieu) Körn. in Gartenflora 7: 87 (1858). Kuntze placed it in Phyllodes as Phyllodes micans (L.Mathieu) Kuntze in Revis. Gen. Pl. 2: 696 (1891). All four earlier placements are now treated as synonyms of the accepted name, as recorded by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in Plants of the World Online [2].

Plants of the World Online lists eleven further synonyms in addition to those four, including Calathea albicans Brongn., Calathea sprucei Rusby, Maranta amabilis Linden, and Maranta nana Poepp. ex Körn. [2]. The synonym Calathea albicans Brongn. is also confirmed by the Borchsenius et al. (2012) paper [1]. One name published simultaneously with the accepted combination in 2012 — Goeppertia sprucei (Rusby) Borchs. & S.Suárez — is treated as a nomenclatural illegitimate name (nom. illeg.) and is accordingly recorded as a synonym rather than an accepted name in Plants of the World Online [2].

The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) requires a cultivar epithet to be enclosed in single quotation marks. The one cultivar registered in the Digital Towns registry for this species carries the epithet 'Misto', formatted accordingly. No International Cultivar Registration Authority has been appointed for Marantaceae [4]; by contrast, the International Aroid Society is the appointed authority for Araceae [5], a separate family. As no ICNCP-sanctioned register exists for Goeppertia, no centralised cultivar checklist for this genus is currently maintained by a designated authority.

Description

Plants of the World Online characterises Goeppertia micans as a perennial, associated with the wet tropical biome [2]. The 2012 Borchsenius, Suárez and Prince revision, which transferred the species to Goeppertia, addressed the genus-level circumscription and phylogenetic position of the species rather than providing a full morphological description of G. micans specifically [1]. No detailed morphological diagnosis drawn from a primary taxonomic record has been located for this species in the sources consulted. Limited authoritative sources available; further research needed.

Distribution and habitat

According to Plants of the World Online (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew), the native range of Goeppertia micans is described as Mexico to southern tropical America [2]. The POWO record enumerates the following territories in the species distribution: Belize, Bolivia, Brazil North, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico Gulf, Mexico Southeast, Mexico Southwest, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela [2]. The species is characterised in that record as a perennial growing primarily in the wet tropical biome [2].

The GBIF Backbone Taxonomy accepts the same name and distributional scope under key 8070508 [3]. No habitat detail beyond the biome classification — wet tropical — is documented in the primary records consulted.

In cultivation

Goeppertia micans is documented as being in cultivation. Plants of the World Online records the species as accepted and notes its medicinal use, indicating documented human interaction with the plant beyond ornamental cultivation [2]. The species was long known in the horticultural trade under the synonym Calathea micans (L.Mathieu) Körn., a name first published by Körnicke in Gartenflora 7: 87 in 1858, and this synonym continues to appear in horticultural contexts [2].

One cultivar, 'Misto', is recorded in the Digital Towns registry for this species. No originator is documented. This cultivar predates any registration authority for Marantaceae. No plant patent number has been located for 'Misto', and no authoritative institutional source — botanic garden publication, university extension with editorial oversight, or peer-reviewed literature — has been located that documents 'Misto' in cultivation beyond the registry row. Limited authoritative sources available; further research needed.

Cultivars

One cultivar is recorded in the Digital Towns registry for Goeppertia micans: 'Misto'. No originator is documented. This cultivar predates any registration authority for Marantaceae. No plant patent number has been located for 'Misto'. No International Cultivar Registration Authority has been appointed for Marantaceae [4], meaning no centralised ICNCP-sanctioned register exists against which this epithet can be cross-checked. Digital Towns is an applicant and aggregator; it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or accredited by the International Society for Horticultural Science or any appointed authority.

Registry record

The entries below are the registry rows this article is written from. Each carries its own source, its role, and both dates. A row recorded as nomenclatural evidence is dated documentation of a name in use and is never cited in the prose above.
