The epithet rhizanthoides refers to the morphological character of the rhizome-borne inflorescence, which serves as the primary diagnostic marker of the species.

The combination Goeppertia rhizanthoides (H.Kenn.) J.M.A.Braga was published by João Marcelo Alvarenga Braga in 2014 in Phytotaxa 167(1): 143–144 [2]. Braga's paper transferred three recently described Panamanian Calathea species, namely C. basiflora, C. rhizanthoides, and C. peregrina, into Goeppertia, noting that because the majority of Calathea species had been placed in Goeppertia by Borchsenius, Suárez and Prince in 2012, the same transfer was required for species described after that revision [2].

The synonym Calathea rhizanthoides H.Kenn. continues to appear in some horticultural literature. It is not the accepted name according to either the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy [3] or Plants of the World Online [4]. Kennedy described the species alongside Calathea peregrina H.Kenn. as new taxa for the Flora Mesoamericana, placing both in the Panamanian endemic flora [1].

Braga's 2014 combination paper groups rhizanthoides with G. basiflora and G. peregrina as species recently documented from wild material in Panama and recently described for the Flora of Panama, situating all three in the same biogeographic and morphological context of newly characterised, Panama-endemic taxa within a redefined Goeppertia [2]. Plants of the World Online records the closely related Goeppertia basiflora (H.Kenn.) J.M.A.Braga, published by Kennedy in the same year and transferred to Goeppertia in the same paper, as a perennial or rhizomatous geophyte growing primarily in the wet tropical biome [4].
